Security breach of EEOC claimants

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) recently notified individuals who had used EEOC’s Public Portal System to file complaints that their personally identifiable information was exposed in a data security breach. EEOC admitted that staff members of a third-party vendor were responsible for the breach.

This data security breach has potentially harmed individuals who relied on EEOC to seek redress for unlawful employment actions. Thus far, the only response from EEOC has been to require passwords to be reset and implementing two-factor authentication.

To place a fraud alert on credit files, EEOC has directed complainants to contact the three major credit bureaus:

  • Experian: experian.com/fraud/center

  • Equifax: equifax.com/personal/credit-report-services

  • TransUnion: transunion.com/fraud-alerts
