Minimum Wage: What Counts and What Doesn’t?

As of 2018 the standard minimum wage in Washington State is $11.50 per hour. Some localities also have their own minimum wages including $15 in Seattle, $12 in Tacoma, and $15.64 in SeaTac.   With very limited exceptions, employers must pay employees this minimum wage. However, sometimes what counts as part of that minimum wage and what doesn’t can be confusing for both employees and employers.Common compensation that does not count toward minimum wage include:InsurancePaid time offTips & GratuitiesMeals & LodgingIn addition to minimum wage, employers are also obligated to pay overtime where applicable.
